Tyler Roberts shares what Raphinha is like in Leeds United training
Raphinha has captured the hearts of Leeds fans in his first season at Elland Road. Joining the club on deadline-day from Stade Rennais, the Brazilian is already a fan favourite after a stellar first season in English football. Now, Tyler Roberts has paid tribute to him – on The Beautiful Game podcast.
Raphinha, 24, joined Leeds after guiding Rennes into the Champions League – and starred in his first season. He has clocked up 15 goal involvements in his 30 Premier League appearances for Leeds, and the likes of Liverpool have other English giants have been linked. He has a contract until 2024.
What has endeared Leeds fans though, is not just his brilliant form in the final third – but his work rate too. Roberts paid tribute to that, applauding the winger’s incredibly high standards that are even evident in training. Luke Ayling has previously eluded to Raphinha’s ability in training.
“Baller. He’s different with it, not just a game-day player,” Roberts has told The Beautiful Game podcast. “He’s a player that I really like. Apart from being Brazilian and having flair, his work rate is ridiculous. If we’re doing a shooting practice, and everyone is having a laugh, he gets angry if he misses one or gets his technique wrong.
“He has got them standards. Some of the stuff he does is outrageous. He’s Brazilian, he just enjoys playing football. In Murderball he just runs, gets on the ball, goes past people. He doesn’t speak too much English but he is getting better, he’s a good vibe man. He’s been great.”
Can Leeds keep hold of Raphinha, amid Roberts comments?
Realistically, Raphinha will not be at Leeds for the rest of his career. Indeed, the Brazilian might not even last the summer with Liverpool being linked. But if the winger has any sense, he will surely stay at Leeds at least for another season and continue to build on his excellent start.
Another season like the one he has just had might convince some of the Premier League’s big hitters in the summer of 2022. He will have entered the last two years of his contract and Leeds can charge a big fee for his services. One more year at Leeds, perhaps.
