Luke Ayling has told Leeds United’s official website that Raphinha has been scoring goals like his winner on Saturday on a regular basis in training since joining the Whites in the summer.
Raphinha stole many of the headlines at Goodison Park after a handful of incredibly bright displays for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. It was his 79th minute strike that decided a pulsating clash with Everton.
It was a fantastic hit from the 23-year-old. He collected the ball some 25 yards out before unleashing a vicious drive into the bottom corner that left Jordan Pickford with no chance.
It had started to get to the point where it seemed that no goal was coming. But it would appear that his teammates would not have been surprised by his strike as Ayling suggested that it was no different to what he is doing during the week.
“We had the bit of quality to score the goal, with Raphinha scoring with a great finish,” he told the club’s official website.
“It was a class strike, he’s been doing that in training ever since he came in.
“He’s been brilliant so far and I’m really pleased for him.”
Raphinha following in Ayling’s footsteps
As strange as it may initially sound, if there is one player who will know what Raphinha – who earns £28,000-a-week, according to Tuttomercatoweb – would have thought after his goal, it may have been Ayling.
It was the right-back who scored a stunning volley against Huddersfield last season. And following the goal, Ayling told LUTV that he had scored the same goal in training the previous day.
So if any teammate could relate, it – perhaps surprisingly – may actually be the defender.
