Luis Diaz made his debut for Liverpool against Cardiff City on Sunday and it didn’t take long for the Colombia international to have an impact.
The 25-year-old was linked with a move to Anfield for months before the move actually happened. Not many people expected Jurgen Klopp to splash the cash in January, but Tottenham Hotspur’s interest made Liverpool accelerate their move for him.
Diaz is a phenomenal footballer. He had already scored 16 goals and had provided six assists for Porto this season, which is a sensational return for a wide player.
Many people felt it would take some time for Diaz to adapt to the English game, but it only took him eight minutes before he had an impact. Jose Enrique loved that and he couldn’t resist a dig at Manchester United’s summer signing Jadon Sancho.
Jose Enrique aims dig at Jadon Sancho after Luis Diaz’s Liverpool debut
Diaz came off the bench for Liverpool for the last 30 minutes of the game and the Reds had already scored by that point. The Colombian was brought on to get a feel of the English game and he made his mark almost immediately.
Just eight minutes after coming on, Diaz stole the ball off a Cardiff player, pulled off an incredible bit of skill and set up Diogo Jota. The Portuguese international couldn’t sort his feet out, but he deflected the ball into the path of Takumi Minamino, who fired home from close range.
Even though it didn’t go down as a Diaz assist, Liverpool fans feel he set that goal up. Enrique quickly took to Instagram to tell the world how it took the Reds’ latest signing just eight minutes to register an assist, while Manchester United’s £73 million man Jadon Sancho took ‘half a year’.
Diaz will be a star for Liverpool
The heated rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool will make the comparisons between Sancho and Diaz a hot topic on social media every time either of them does something good.
That’s a never-ending debate, but Liverpool fans should really be excited about Diaz, who is a fantastic footballer.
The Colombian has been a star at Porto for a while now and a big move was always on the cards. Liverpool’s system is absolutely perfect for him and under a manager like Jurgen Klopp, he will only get better.
It will be interesting to see how Diaz will fare against the big sides in the Premier League. He definitely has the quality to deliver and if he does, we expect Enrique to come out with more posts in praise of the new Liverpool signing.
