Troy Deeney picks Manchester United as surprise landing spot for £50m striker

Manchester United have just over a week left to complete their transfer business, and there are still potentially a few gaps to be filled.

Ferdi Kadioglu is in talks over a move to Man United in a bid to strengthen the left-back position, while the Red Devils plan a huge offer to sign Frenkie De Jong this summer.

And, with Scott McTominay attracting interest from Tottenham, there could be a potential space to fill in the middle of midfield before the window closes.

Yet, Troy Deeney feels as if the Red Devils still need to be looking at attacking reinforcements.

Troy Deeney says Ivan Toney is the perfect striker for Manchester United

Speaking on Ben Foster’s YouTube channel, The Cycling GK, Deeney mooted Ivan Toney as the perfect striker for Manchester United amid exit links.

When asked about potential destinations for Toney to land this summer, Deeney said: “Man United, Man United – all day, every day.

“That’s the one that you look at the style, you go, right, they need a targetman, they can look after the ball, someone that can link it with players running behind, Marcus, Garnacho, they like to run in behind without the ball, and then they always get into wide positions, and they cross it, and they have got Bruno Fernandes trying to head it, which is not his game.

“You know what I mean? Get balls in the box, and he will score, but they have just invested heavily last year on a striker, so to do it again is questionable.”

Tottenham have an interest in Toney, and there are other suitors, with the Saudi Pro League a potential destination, so it won’t be easy should Man United dip back into the market for another striker.

Ivan Toney is the striker Erik ten Hag has been craving

Manchester United received the news that Rasmus Hojlund was set to be out for six weeks at the start of August, which piled even more pressure on Joshua Zirkzee after joining from Bologna.

Putting all your trust in a new signing with very little Premier League experience is a huge gamble, which didn’t exactly pay off with Hojlund last season as he netted just 10 in the Premier League.

On the other hand, Toney proved to be one of the standout strikers in the top flight before his suspension, scoring an impressive 20 goals in 33 appearances for Brentford in the 2022-2023 season.

In addition to his goalscoring ability, the Englishman effectively brings other players into the game as a target man in the final third.

This is something that the likes of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Alejandro Garnacho can all benefit from, with knockdowns and flick-ons to get them in behind.

However, having spent well over £100 million already this summer, it would come as a surprise to see the Manchester club splash out again, with Brentford demanding £50 million for Toney.
