Manchester United had an interesting summer transfer window.
Indeed, the Red Devils made numerous additions in key areas, but, there are still some gaping holes in this team.
Bryan Mbeumo looks like a good signing, while Matheus Cunha is a top player too.
However, United didn’t address their midfield balance, and after just a handful of games this season, that is evident.
Speaking on The Football Exchange, Troy Deeney has been discussing some of Manchester United’s problems, and he says the Red Devils should have gone for one of Chelsea’s fringe players over the summer.

Chelsea should’ve gone for Andrey Santos
Deeney spoke with his co-host about Manchester United’s midfield problems.
According to the pundit, Ruben Amorim’s side should’ve asked for Andrey Santos as a part of the deal to send Alejandro Garnacho to Stamford Bridge.
“Andrey Santos, in my opinion, would be their best midfielder,” The host said.
“By a country mile. I said it to you. That would be one, if I’m Man United I would’ve said we will give you Garnacho, let us loan him with an obligation to buy next year. I would have made it more difficult for Garnacho to leave,” Deeney said.
Manchester United’s previous swap deals analysed
Deeney suggests United should have done a swap deal here, and he may not be wrong.
Indeed, United need more midfield quality, while Santos isn’t getting many starts at Chelsea.
However, swap deals are complicated transactions, and they don’t often come off.
That said, United have done a handful of swap deals in the Premier League era, and some have been brilliant signings.
| Manchester United past swap deals | Year |
| Alexis Sanchez – Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Arsenal – Manchester United) | 2018 |
| Andy Cole – Keith Gillespie + £7m (Newcastle – Manchester United | 1995 |
| Alan Smith – Danny Pugh + £7m (Leeds – Manchester United) | 2004 |
Alexis Sanchez was a flop at United, but Andy Cole became a bona fide legend at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Alan Smith was a decent servant for United before his injury against Liverpool derailed his career.
Unfortunately, United didn’t angle to sign the £13m Chelsea midfielder this summer in a swap deal for Garnacho, and, sadly, Ruben Amorim’s midfield issues continue to cause problems.
