‘Tottenham would be the best destination’… ESPN pundit says £80m star should sign for Spurs this summer

Steve Nicol has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur would be the best club for Ivan Toney to join in the summer transfer window.

It looks increasingly likely that Ivan Toney will be leaving Brentford in the summer. The 27-year-old seems to have picked up where he left off before his ban, with two goals in his last three appearances.

Thomas Frank has already suggested that he would not be surprised to see Toney move this summer. And you would imagine that a host of teams would be in the mix – despite claims that he could cost £80 million.

Some will think that Arsenal are the perfect club for Toney. But speaking on ESPN, Steve Nicol has now claimed that the England international would be best off signing for Ange Postecoglou when the window opens.

“It’s very difficult to argue with the stats. The guy’s goalscoring record in the Premier League is really, really good. I think Tottenham would be the best destination for him. I don’t believe Liverpool, City or Arsenal is the place for him,” he said.

Major statement of intent

It would be a huge statement of intent if Tottenham could sign Toney in the summer, particularly if he is going to cost a club-record sum.

There does not appear to be too many world-class strikers on the market right now. And Toney is someone with 34 goals in 70 appearances in the Premier League. He also has nine assists. He scored 20 times in the top-flight last year.

So he would surely elevate almost any side by signing this summer.

Tottenham have seen Richarlison find some real form of late. But they may perhaps be back in the Champions League next year. So they should certainly have their eye on securing further fire-power.

And Toney would definitely provide that.
