Report: Tottenham want to sign 'perfect' French international, days after Chelsea made their move

Tottenham have put RC Lens defender, Jonathan Clauss, on their list of potential signings this summer, just days after Chelsea made their own move.

Spurs supremo Fabio Paratici is keeping a close eye on a number of transfer targets. He is looking to close out a deal to bring in Djed Spence. However, Spurs and Middlesbrough are yet to agree on a fee over Spence and Paratici is keeping his options open on alternatives.

And according to Sky Sports, Tottenham have put Lens flyer Clauss on their list. It comes just a day after reports suggested Chelsea had also green-lighted a move to sign the French international.

7 Footballers Who Are Too Good For The Championship But Aren't Good Enough For The Premier League

Clauss’ form last season was outstanding for Lens. He notched up an impressive 11 assists while he also chipped in with a handy five goals for his team. He would fit the bill for Antonio Conte down the right. The Spurs coach is looking for someone to join the ranks

Tottenham have already been making themselves known in the market this summer. Paratici has managed to sign Forster, Bissouma, and Perisic already, with others set to follow. Clauss, who is now 29, was in the lower leagues in France as recently as 2017. He now has four caps for his country.

TBR’s View: Clauss A Good Option For Tottenham

The priority has to be to sign Djed Spence but there’s a nice fall back here with Jonathan Clauss.

The only problem really is his age. At 29 he’s no spring chicken and Spurs might only get a few years of really high level football from him. He’s also risky in that he hasn’t got that experience in England yet, despite having plenty of games in the tank in France.

But, if Clauss is cheap, and Spence can’t get done, then it might be a suitable short-termer for Tottenham.
