Report: Tottenham hoping to convince Liverpool and Manchester United-linked international to sign this month
Tottenham Hotspur are pressing ahead in their efforts to sign a new midfielder this January and are trying to convince AC Milan to sell Franck Kessie to them during the window.
Kessie is free to negotiate a pre-contract with his current deal set to expire this summer. A number of clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United, are also keen on him. However, it is Tottenham who hold the strongest chance of landing Kessie as things stand.
According to The Times, Tottenham are trying to convince Milan to do business for Kessie now. That would mean the Serie A side selling on the cheap. But they could be convinced to engage in such talks, given Kessie is going to leave for nothing in the summer anyway.
Spurs have been tracking Kessie for some time now. In fact, just a few weeks back we reported how Daniel Levy was willing to pay big wages for the Ivorian. He could sign a new deal worth more than £140k-a-week, which would put him on par with Heung-Min Son.
Kessie could also offer an immediate upgrade and replacement on Tanguy Ndombele. The Spurs midfielder is being tipped to leave, with Juventus having already been offered him this month.
TBR’s View: Tottenham Getting Franck Kessie Is Huge Statement
If Spurs can beat Premier League rivals to the signing of Kessie, then it will be a big message. He is one of the premium midfielders currently available in Europe.
Antonio Conte has made no secret of his desire to see new players arrive. He needs improvements in his squad and Kessie certainly provides that. He’d bring quality to the middle of the park and that bit of bite Conte likes to see in his players. Branded ‘devastating’ by Italian forward Antonio Cassano, there is plenty to like in Kessie’s game.
Of course, he could arrive in the summer for free. But if Spurs can pay a nominal fee now and have him for the second half of the season, then the top four suddenly becomes more realistic.
