Report: Tottenham made big push for 'best midfielder in the world' this summer, Conte requested him personally
Tottenham enjoyed a busy old summer this time around but they tried to do even more business in the form of Nicolo Barella as well.
The Italian international is well known to Antonio Conte and Sempre Inter relays reports from the Italian media that Spurs did indeed make a big enquiry to try and sign Barella this summer. It’s believed Antonio Conte mentioned Barella as one of the main names the club should sign.
Of course, Inter batted back interest from Tottenham with Sempre Inter stating how Inter immediately told Tottenham they had no intention of selling the star midfielder. Deemed one of the best in the world in his position previously, Barella would certainly have turned heads in North London had he signed.
Spurs boss Conte knows Barella all too well from their time together in Milan. It’s been a running theme of Conte’s time with the club so far, in that he recommends players to Fabio Paratici who he fully trusts. Ivan Perisic being a prime example of that.
It remains to be seen if Tottenham will go again for Barella at some point. Spurs are likely to be active in January, while next summer will also see the club strike again.
TBR’s View: Barella To Tottenham Mouthwatering For Fans
Midfielders in Europe don’t come much more well rounded than Nicolo Barella. The Inter star has been outstanding for Inter for some time now and his performances with Italy have also been impressive.
He would be a huge buy for Spurs if they did eventually get him, with talk that Inter might have even asked for as much as £77m to let him go.
However, we shouldn’t put anything past Spurs with Paratici guiding things. He’s shown he can get big deals done and if the money is there, Barella might yet end up in England.
