Report: Tottenham willing to lose money in order to sign 'class' £17m player in January

Tottenham are willing to potentially lose some money by giving up their 50% rights to Marcus Edwards in order to convince Sporting to sell them Pedro Porro.

Edwards has been super impressive in Portugal since moving from the London outfit. This season, in particular, he has seen a rise in performance levels that’s seen some question Spurs’ logic in letting him go.

However, Spurs also hold an interest in Lisbon’s flying full-back, Pedro Porro. And according to CM Sport, Tottenham could be willing to forgo the 50% economic rights they have in Edwards so Sporting let them have Porro.

There comes an element of risk with that. For example, should Sporting sell Edwards for circa £50m, Spurs would be forgoing some £25m. Of course, if it meant they landed Porro in the immediate then Spurs might see that as a risk they’d be willing to take. Likewise, Edwards might not be sold for such a fee in the future anyway.

Porro is thought to feature high up on Antonio Conte’s wanted list this January. Indeed, it’s even been suggested Conte would be far from impressed if Spurs don’t land the right-back.

Porro is believed to have a release-clause in his contract around the £40m mark.

It’s always nice to have a few cards to draw from when it comes to transfer negotiations. And with Edwards, it seems Tottenham very much have something they could use here.

The big question is whether they feel it’s more valuable to get Porro in now or, in the long run, hope Edwards goes for a huge sum.

Conte would surely prefer the idea of landing a new player in a key position now. He clearly likes Porro and in reality, won’t care too much how the deal is done as long as it gets over the line.
