Report: Antonio Conte will be left seriously annoyed if Tottenham don't sign £40m player in January
The Athletic reports that Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte is eager to upgrade his options at wing-back in January and he will be left seriously annoyed if they don’t sign Sporting Lisbon star Pedro Porro.
Spurs’ deficiencies at right wing-back have been evident this season, with both Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty failing to impress.
Royal has often frustrated Tottenham fans with his lack of potency in the final third, while Doherty has struggled to get back up to full speed after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Tottenham did bring in Djed Spence from Middlesbrough over the summer, but the youngster has found opportunities hard to come by and has only made three substitute appearances under Conte.
90 Min reports that the Spurs boss is keen to upgrade his options at right wing-back next month. Correio da Manhã claimed earlier this month that they are preparing a formal offer for a player they’ve faced in the Champions League this season in Porro.
There have been suggestions that Tottenham have doubts over the Spanish wing-back’s injury record and physical suitability to play in Conte’s system. But it seems that the Italian is keen on signing the player and will be frustrated if Tottenham can’t complete a deal.
Conte will be annoyed if Spurs don’t sign Porro
The Athletic reports that Conte wants reinforcements in January, particularly at right wing-back.
The club have failed to address the area of the pitch effectively over the last two transfer windows and the Italian does not want them to make the same mistake next month.
But Porro is set to be an expensive deal for the north Londoners to complete and Sporting may not want to sell the 23-year-old.
The wing-back only signed for the Portuguese outfit permanently from Manchester City over the summer after spending two years on loan at the Lisbon-based club.
But the Athletic notes that Spurs are not likely to spend big next month and if they fail to address the right wing-back area, it will frustrate Conte.
The Spurs boss apparently believes that he is a few players away from what he needs to succeed in north London.
Porro currently has a release clause in contract with Sporting that is believed to be worth around £40 million. While that is a big outlay for Tottenham to commit to in January, they will be aware that they need to keep Conte satisfied.
The Italian’s contract with Spurs is set to expire at the end of the season, but the club do have an option to extend his stay by a year.
Yet, if Conte feels he cannot challenge for trophies at Tottenham, he will certainly not hesitate to leave his role. He’s shown in the past that he is willing to walk away from jobs if he feels his ambition is not being matched.
Daniel Levy will need to show Conte he is serious about helping Tottenham challenge towards the top end of the table and a signing like Porro next month could go a long way to proving that.
