Tottenham reportedly want English star that Chris Sutton expected to follow Leicester's James Maddison
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keeping an eye on Norwich City playmaker Todd Cantwell. The English ace has just helped the Canaries return to the Premier League. Chris Sutton said in 2020 he expected Cantwell to follow James Maddison, which will excite Tottenham fans.
Cantwell, 23, struggled with a hip injury during the first part of last season but ended up clocking up 33 Championship appearances. He started 30 of those but only completed 90 minutes in four league games. Despite that, the England Under-21 ace still scored six and created seven more.
Little surprise, then, that Spurs are keen. Dean Jones has said on the Football Terrace podcast that Tottenham are monitoring his form. Speaking about his future back in February 2020, Sutton suggested the £30million-rated star (Mail) could follow Leicester’s James Maddison in leaving.
“We had James Maddison at Norwich. Now, I think this boy is going places as well. He takes the ball beautifully. What impresses me is his defensive discipline. A terrific talent. Wonderful awareness. We will be seeing him play for a top-six club in the near future,” Sutton told Match of the Day.
Do Tottenham need Cantwell – amid Sutton likening situation to Maddison?
Tottenham need attacking reinforcements. Gareth Bale is set to return to Real Madrid, Carlos Vinicius’ loan sees him return to Benfica. Erik Lamela is in his final 12 months and needs to be sold this summer to get some cash. Tottenham need replacements, but is Cantwell the man?
Well, he can play on either flank or as a 10 – which helps. But you get the impression with Cantwell that he needs to be getting regular game time, a starter – one of the big fishes in a smaller pond. At Norwich he is that. At Tottenham, he would be far from it. One to ponder.
