Tottenham reportedly eyeing £80k-a-week star Redknapp labelled a 'rough diamond' and a 'midfielder's dream'

Tottenham are reportedly in talks to sign Manchester United defender Eric Bailly – a player Jamie Redknapp branded a “midfielder’s dream” in 2016.

Bailly, 27, is struggling for game time at Manchester United this season – managing just three appearances for the Old Trafford club so far.

Antonio Conte is playing three players in defence at the moment, and the Italian is said to want to bring in a couple of central defenders in January.

That is, according to Transfer Window reporter Duncan Castles. 41-time Ivory Coast international Bailly is said to be a target for Spurs and Conte.

Castles says that discussions have taken place, and while there has been no formal offer – Bailly could find himself relocating in North London soon.

Speaking about the £80,000-a-week (Spotrac) defender back in 2016, ex-Tottenham midfielder Redknapp was full of praise in his analysis.

“He’s a rough diamond, a midfielder’s dream because he can play. He’ll pop the ball into midfield at times, he’s got great pace, he’s uncompromising.”

Redknapp on Bailly: Tottenham would be making a solid signing

But there is one concern, the fact that Bailly is somewhat injury prone. Tottenham do also have plenty of options in the middle of their defence.

Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanches are currently acting as cover for Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Cristian Romero at the back.

What Bailly brings, is more quality – arguably enough to start for Spurs ahead of Dier. But his injury past is a concern.

Depending on the price, and given Redknapp’s comments on Bailly from 2016, he would be a good signing – if he can remain injury free.
