Journalist: Manchester United man emerges as surprise option for Tottenham and Conte

Duncan Castles claims that Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move to sign Manchester United defender Eric Bailly, ahead of the January window.

Antonio Conte’s arrival at Tottenham has seen the North London side revert to a back three. The Italian is famed for his 3-4-3 system, with wing-backs.

Eric Dier has started all three of Conte’s games as manager at the heart of the defence. Cristian Romero is first on the right, Ben Davies on the left.

But clearly, Conte wants additions and needs a body or two at the heart of his defence to give him cover. That is, according to transfer expert Castles.

He claims, on his Transfer Window podcast, that Tottenham want to sign two defenders. One of those, is Ivory Coast and United star Bailly.

“Conte, one of the things he’s asking for in January is not one, but two starting centre-backs, this isn’t a big surprise,” Castles said.

“One of the individuals they’re in discussions about, as I understand it, is a Manchester United player, Eric Bailly.

“He’s someone Conte likes and he looked at him as a possible recruit at Inter. There’s been no offer made at this point,” Castles continued.

Bailly to Tottenham: How much could Manchester United charge?

Bought for £30million (ESPN) from Villarreal, Bailly has a contract at United until the summer of 2024. United are under no pressure to sell.

However, he is not first choice at United and his time at Old Trafford has been tumultous. Numerous injuries have hampered his momentum.

Spotrac report that he is earning £80,000 a week. While Manchester United may want a profit on Bailly, they could hardly charge a huge amount.

His wages are affordable, still only 27. Mourinho said in 2016: “He is a team boy, he is great. He is honest, always ready to give everything for the team.”

If Spurs can get Bailly on similar wages for around £35million to £40million, then it is a deal worth doing.
