Tottenham now want to sign £20m midfielder who James Maddison once labelled the best tackler in the league

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a January move for Leicester City midfielder Wilfried Ndidi.

That’s according to TEAMtalk, with the outlet claiming that Ndidi is attracting interest from a host of Premier League sides ahead of the January window.

Spurs could be in the market for a midfielder in January as they prepare for a spell without Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma.

Indeed, both players will head off to the Africa Cup of Nations midway through the winter transfer market while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future remains unclear.

Of course, Tottenham failed with a deadline-day move to land Conor Callagher from Chelsea over the summer and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them target midfield reinforcements.

And if TEAMtalk are to be believed, they could switch their focus to Wilfried Ndidi in the upcoming transfer window.

Tottenham want Ndidi in January

The outlet claims Ndidi is attracting interest from Tottenham, Newcastle Aston Villa and Brentford.

All four Premier League clubs are considering a January move for the midfielder, while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have also enquired about signing him.

It’s noted that Leicester are keen to keep hold of Ndidi but they face an uphill battle as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Ndidi has been ever-present for the Foxes in the Championship this season, having netted three times in 12 league appearances.

The 26-year-old was widely recognised as one of the standout holding midfielders in the Premier League just a couple of years ago.

He formed a brilliant partnership with James Maddison during their time at the King Power Stadium together. And the now Spurs star once labelled him as the Premier League’s best tackler.

“I think he’s the best in the Premier League at tackling and winning the ball back, bar none,” Maddison told Goal back in November 2019.

“I know [N’Golo] Kante is a brilliant player and there are players like that. But actually winning the ball back and taking the ball off the opposition, I don’t think there is anyone better than Wilfred.

“Sometimes you get a player like that and what he does doesn’t get on the back page of the papers, doesn’t get talked about on Match of the Day. Us as team-mates and players who play against him realise what a top player he is.

“He’s fantastic at what he does and he lets players like me and Youri Tielemans do our thing higher up the pitch because we know we’ve got that solidity behind us.”

Ndidi has struggled with persistent injuries over the past few seasons which has ultimately led to a drop-off in form.

While Spurs are in need of decent cover for Bissouma, it would be a gamble for them to move for the Foxes star.

The £20 million man was previously a top midfielder and if Spurs got that player, it could be an astute signing.

But given Ndidi’s form over the past year, Tottenham may be better off looking elsewhere.
