Rangers interested in signing England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on free transfer

Scottish Premiership champions Rangers are interested in signing West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to the Daily Mail.

However, the Ibrox side face stiff competition for the England international with several Premier League clubs chasing his signature.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle and West Ham are all monitoring the former Manchester United academy graduate.

Despite playing in the second tier of English football, Johnstone has firmly remained in Gareth Southgate’s England plans and he will no doubt be targeting a place in the Three Lions’ World Cup squad.

With Johnstone facing a fight to be one of three goalkeepers Southgate takes to Qatar, a move north to the border and the prospect of playing European football could appeal to the Baggies stopper.

With the goalkeeping situation at Ibrox remaining uncertain this summer, interest in Johnstone could become firmer if he is seen as a priority target.

Allan McGregor, who has been the Scottish giants number one for the last four seasons, turned 40 in January and his contract expires at the end of the season.

It could well mean that Giovanni van Bronckhorst uses the summer window as an opportunity to revamp the goalkeeping position.

Last season, which was Johnstone’s first full campaign in the Premier League as a number one goalkeeper, the three-time England international only missed one game as West Brom got relegated.

But with it looking increasingly likely that the Hawthorns side won’t bounce straight back up to the Premier League at this time of asking, Johnstone is likely to pursue a different avenue in the summer when his contract ends.

Sam Johnstone, who has 14 clean sheets from 33 Championship games this season, could form part of Rangers’ summer plans, but the Europa League quarter-finalists will have to stave off competition from Premier League clubs.
