Tottenham interested in signing Spain international who Lionel Messi called ‘fantastic’

Right now, most Tottenham Hotspur fans would probably conclude that Ange Postecoglou predominantly needs defensive additions in the January transfer window.

Pedro Porro was the only first choice Tottenham defender available to Postecoglou against Arsenal, a full-back who is more interested in bombing forward anyway.

Archie Gray lined up alongside Radu Dragusin once again and Djed Spence played 90 minutes at left-back.

Spurs will hope to have all of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie back as soon as possible, but until then, Postecoglou could do with some January help.

Although, reports in Spain are now suggesting that the north Londoners are more interested in recruiting another attacker right now.

Tottenham interested in signing Barcelona’s Ansu Fati who is free to leave

According to Sport, Tottenham have reignited their interest in Barcelona winger Ansu Fati, who was strongly linked with the club before he joined Brighton & Hove Albion on loan last season.

Fati thought he was joining Tottenham before he then made his way to Brighton instead, where he didn’t enjoy the most productive loan spell.

Lionel Messi once called Fati ‘fantastic’ as a youngster at Barcelona, but the 22-year-old is yet to fulfill his potential owing to a series of injuries.

Now, Sport are confirming that both Tottenham and West Ham United are showing interest in the winger.

Barcelona have made it clear to Fati that he’s not in the club’s plans and they are willing to sanction a six-month loan for the Spain international.

The report claims that Tottenham will be active this month and that Fati is seen as an ‘opportunity’ to add quality whilst only covering the forwards wages if he arrives on loan.

Spurs should be warned by Ansu Fati’s struggles on loan at Brighton

Fati has already suffered a couple of injuries for Barcelona this season, meaning he’s only made eight appearances and played 186 minutes under Hansi Flick, who also isn’t too interested in using the winger.

For Brighton last season, Fati made 30 appearances with 19 of those coming in the Premier League.

Those appearances in all competitions yielded four goals and one assist, a loan spell that wasn’t considered to be a success in Spain.

A calf injury disrupted Fati’s time on the English south coast, which should perhaps serve as a warning to Spurs.

Postecoglou’s style was criticised by Aaron Lennon after the North London Derby, but with all of Spurs’ issues right now it’s hard to see how signing Fati would be the answer.

A brilliant player and one who might still fulfil his potential, but he’s simply not the profile which Tottenham need right now.
