'They are missing': BBC pundit says World Cup nation couldn't cope without injured Spurs player

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte may not need Giovani Lo Celso, but Argentina certainly did today.

The 26-year-old is currently on loan at Villarreal, with Conte deeming him surplus to requirements at Spurs.

Lo Celso was hoping to go to the World Cup, but sadly he didn’t recover from a hamstring injury in time.

As per Todo Noticias, the Tottenham loanee did everything he could to try and be available for Qatar.

But in the end, Lo Celso couldn’t make it to the tournament, and has since undergone surgery.

Fast-forward to today, and Argentina found themselves on the receiving end of a huge World Cup upset.

The Albiceleste took on Saudi Arabia in Lusail and began brightly.

Lionel Messi gave his nation a 10th-minute lead from the penalty spot.

Then, Argentina had three goals ruled out for offside.

In the second half, Saudi Arabia turned the game on its head with goals from Saleh Al Shehri and Salem Al Dawsari.

The Green Falcons held on for arguably the biggest upset in World Cup history.

BBC Sport pundit Clinton Morrison, speaking on Radio 5 Live, claimed that Lo Celso’s absence cost his nation dear.

“Argentina are missing Giovani Lo Celso,” he said, via the BBC Sport website.

“They are missing that connection between midfield and Lionel Messi. They didn’t have a creative spark.

“I thought Di Maria and Martinez were poor.

“They could have been here all night and I don’t think they would have scored.

“I still think they’ll get out of the group though.”

Lo Celso will hopefully kick on and seal big move away from Tottenham – TBR View

It’s a huge shame that Lo Celso is missing the World Cup.

Fingers crossed he recovers fully and goes on to play a key role in a strong finish to the season for Villarreal.

While Lo Celso seems unlikely to have a future at Tottenham, he can certainly do a job for another team.

And a good season with Villarreal will put him in the shop window, where he can potentially seal a top move in the summer.
