Report: Tottenham player undergoing surgery today, will miss out on World Cup
Tottenham Hotspur loanee Giovani Lo Celso is undergoing surgery today, according to Argentine outlet TN.
The 26-year-old is currently on loan at Villarreal, with Spurs boss Antonio Conte deeming him surplus to requirements at N17.
Lo Celso sustained a hamstring injury during Villarreal’s La Liga loss against Athletic Bilbao on 30 October.
Scans confirmed that the Tottenham-owned player suffered a hamstring tear, as per Spanish outlet AS.
TN reported on Wednesday that Lo Celso would be going under the knife the following day.
The 26-year-old apparently ‘tried everything to be with the Argentina national team at the Qatar World Cup’.
Lo Celso was reportedly ‘willing to make any effort, even financial, not to be operated on’
He wanted to recover in order to be able to play in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
However, Argentina decided not to take him to Qatar due to the lack of certainly over whether he’d recover in time to play.
In addition, Lo Celso couldn’t ‘twist the decision’ of Tottenham and Villarreal regarding his fitness and recovery.
The Spurs midfielder has therefore travelled to Turku, Finland with his family to undergo surgery.
It’s a huge shame that Lo Celso will miss the World Cup – as per the article, he is distraught about it.
Fingers crossed he recovers fully and goes on to play a key role in a strong finish to the season for Villarreal.
While Lo Celso seems unlikely to have a future at Tottenham, he can certainly do a job for another team.
And a good season with Villarreal will put him in the shop window, where he can potentially seal a top move in the summer.
