Djed Spence played a key role in Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-season win over North London rivals Arsenal.

Thomas Frank’s new-look Spurs team looked rather impressive in the first North London derby to be played outside of the UK.

Pape Matar Sarr’s impressive goal proved to be the winning moment in Hong Kong as the Senegalese midfielder scored from over 50 yards out.

But the youngster wasn’t the only player who impressed at the Kai Tak Sports Park, with Djed Spence also catching the eye against the Gunners.

Djed Spence impresses Tottenham fans against Bukayo Saka

Tottenham Hotspur supporters were left so impressed by Spence’s defensive display against Bukayo Saka in Hong Kong.

The defender was tasked with defending one of the best right-wingers in the Premier League and passed the test with flying colours.

The defender was tasked with filling in for the injured Destiny Udogie at left-back, with the Italian having missed the trip to Asia.

Spence, who has been ‘rapid’, made it a tough afternoon for the Arsenal winger, who failed to register a single attempt at goal.

Saka managed 43 touches against Spurs, but rarely looked like a threat for the Gunners and was eventually hauled off for Max Dowman.

Dowman showed why he’s highly rated with some impressive dribbles, but the 15-year-old couldn’t quite get the better of Spence.

After the game in Hong Kong, Spurs fans took to X to share their praise for the left-back and his performance against Saka and Dowman.

One fan said: “I’m very impressed so far. Spence is handling Saka well.”

Meanwhile, another supporter claimed: “Djed Spence didn’t give Saka a sniff.”

There was further praise for the defender: “Spence is just phenomenal. I mean, have you seen Saka on the pitch?”

Finally, another added: “Saka is having a wonderful performance from Spence’s pocket.

Frank tried to bring Spence to Brentford in 2023, but now, he will finally get the chance to work with the full-back in North London.

Clive Allen hails Djed Spence’s performance against Bukayo Saka

Tottenham legend Clive Allen hailed Spence’s performance against Saka and picked it out as one of the key takeaways from the match.

The former Spurs striker thought he was excellent in one-on-one situations against one of the Premier League’s top attackers.

Allen told SpursPlay: “I thought Djed Spence was outstanding in the one-on-one situations with Saka; he provided very little for Arsenal on that side. He blocked crosses, he tracked him and made it a very difficult night for him.

“Absolutely, you could see he was really up for the challenge, you know what a talented player Saka is, and it was going to be a big test for him tonight, and he definitely stood up to that test. I can’t actually recall Saka actually dribbling past him, which is one of his greatest strengths.”
