Tottenham fans discuss Matt Doherty display away at Leicester

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the performance of Matt Doherty after the defender came on against Leicester City on Wednesday.

Doherty finds himself in an interesting situation at Spurs. He has been linked with a move away during the January transfer window. In fact, it has even been reported that he could return to Wolves in a swap deal involving Adama Traore.

However, he has had chances under Antonio Conte. He made his fourth Premier League appearance under the Italian at the King Power Stadium. Meanwhile, he also featured in both legs of the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

Of course, that is partially down to the form of Emerson Royal. The summer signing has really struggled to prove that he is suitable for Conte’s system.

Royal endured another underwhelming evening during the first-half at Leicester. And with that, Conte decided to make a change at the break, with Doherty coming on.

Within a couple of minutes, Doherty had already made a greater contribution than his teammate. He looked incredibly lively down the right flank, and played one very nice cross in. He was also up there for key passes, despite only coming on midway through (Whoscored).

He came close to scoring just before the hour-mark, running onto the ball on the edge of the box. However, his effort was curled just wide with his left foot.

Obviously, Doherty still has plenty of doubters. It would be wrong to pretend that the reaction was entirely positive. And one performance is not going to change perceptions drastically. But certainly, plenty of Tottenham fans felt that Doherty did well.

There is an argument that he may have pushed ahead of Royal in the pecking order. And if he continues to play like that, Tottenham may have reason to wonder whether they do need to push for a deal for Traore given that the Wolves man has hardly been in stunning form himself.
