Report: Tottenham could yet sign 'incredible' summer transfer target with club unwilling to improve his contract
Tottenham were linked with a move for Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo all summer long and it appears the door might still be open.
Zaniolo was apparently one of Antonio Conte’s personal recommendations to Fabio Paratici although in the end, Spurs’ attempts to sign the Italian proved fruitless.
However, according to 90Min, the door might be open for Tottenham to make another move in January, with Roma said to be unwilling to give Zaniolo the upgraded contract he wants. The midfielder is thought to be seeking a pay rise with the Serie A club and it’s suggested Roma aren’t willing to bow to those wishes.
Of course, a move to the big-spending Premier League with Tottenham could give Zaniolo that financial reward. Clubs have spent nearly £2bn this summer, showing once again there is no shortage of cash at Premier League level.
Dubbed an ‘incredible‘ player for the performances he has delivered in Italy, Roma are said to value the midfielder at around the £42m mark. And with January closer than people like to think, that sort of money might not be enough to put off big-spending PL owners.
TBR’s View: Zaniolo Another Tottenham Improvement
For Antonio Conte, the signings now will surely be about adding quality to the ranks rather than quantity.
This summer, Conte was backed with a number of signings who have all improved aspects of the first XI and the squad in general. But as time goes on, the task for Tottenham is surely improving the first-team, not simply just adding the odd squad player for certain games.
Zaniolo certainly brings a quality to Spurs that they’ve not got. He’s a class act and proven at a big club who is expected to challenge for trophies. Certainly, if Spurs did land Zaniolo, it improves the team for Conte immediately.
