Tottenham could now persuade Martin Terrier to join - journalist

Journalist Jonathan Johnson has told Give Me Sport that he believes that Martin Terrier would be interested in moving to a club like Tottenham Hotspur, rather than heading to Newcastle.

Terrier has picked up where he left off last season, scoring eight goals in 14 games for Rennes in Ligue 1. He went into the season off the back of a campaign where he scored 21 times in the top-flight.

It was not enough to earn Terrier a place in the France squad for the World Cup. But perhaps his form may soon earn his a switch to the Premier League.

Terrier would be open to Tottenham

Reports in the summer from Foot Mercato claimed that Spurs had made a bid for the 25-year-old. At the time, Rennes were reportedly looking for £30 million for the forward.

Johnson was asked whether a club like Newcastle could make a move to sign Terrier. And interestingly, he suggested that it was more likely that a switch to Antonio Conte’s side would appeal more.

“I think that there are other clubs who might perhaps be able to put a more interesting proposition to him in terms of immediate involvement in top-level European football,” he told Give Me Sport.

“So, if Spurs were to come back with some interest, for example, I think the potential of going and playing in the Champions League with them might sway his opinion.”

Tottenham would certainly benefit from signing another striker in January – if their budget allows.

Obviously, Harry Kane remains the first name on the team sheet in North London. And they do have other players who can fill in for him if he is unavailable.

However, the likes of Richarlison, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura are versatile. And thus, they can struggle to fill the void left by Kane if he is not used.

Admittedly, Terrier fits into that category also. He has actually played the majority of his football on the left of either a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 for Rennes this season.

But he is someone who has been scoring for fun since the start of last season. Thierry Henry suggested that he is a player he really likes. And he previously backed him for a call-up to Les Bleus.

Perhaps it would not be a surprise if Tottenham did indeed make a fresh move for Terrier in one of the coming windows.
