'Tottenham are the most likely': Journalist claims Spurs lead race for 'incredible' £20m talent

Tottenham Hotspur remain the “most likely” side to sign Djed Spence, according to journalist Jacque Talbot.

Spurs have already got three signings over the line this summer, and are now working hard on their fourth.

The Dehumanisation of Footballers

Fabrizio Romano claimed last week that Spurs are now focusing on a new right-back and a new centre-back.

And Spence, who shone at right-back for Nottingham Forest last term, is in Tottenham’s sights.

According to Sky Sports, Spurs are in line for further talks this week over the Middlesbrough talent.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will reportedly take over from Fabio Paratici in pursuit of the 21-year-old.

Spurs reportedly face competition from the likes of Nottingham Forest, Roma, Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United for the “incredible” player’s services.

But Talbot, writing on GiveMeSport, reckons it’s a two-horse race for Spence, featuring Tottenham and Forest.

“From what I hear, he will be sold by Middlesbrough in this window, that’s for definite,” he wrote.

“And it’ll either be Nottingham Forest, who he loves and his family and friends love, or he’ll go to Spurs because they’re attractive and have Champions League football.

“Tottenham are the most likely to sign Spence at the moment.”

“His most likely destination”

Last week, The Athletic’s David Ornstein claimed Spurs are the £20million-rated player’s preferred choice.

“The preference of Djed Spence… is to sign permanently for Tottenham Hotspur,” he said on The Athletic UK’s YouTube channel.

“It’s not done, they need to agree a fee, Middlesbrough and Tottenham.

“They are talking, the negotiations are ongoing and there is no agreement as things stand and there are lots of clubs interested in him.

“However, the preference of this 21-year-old England Under-21 international is to join Tottenham.

“The lure of Champions League football under Antonio Conte is pretty persuasive in his mind.

“We’re not saying this is going to happen quickly, it might drag on, but I do think that’s his most likely destination, it’s where he would prefer to go.”
