Report: Spurs left furious after news they were interested in 'sensational' player leaks to the press

Tottenham Hotspur appear set to miss out on yet another transfer target this month, with Porto star Luis Diaz said to be in talks to finalise a move to Liverpool over the weekend.

Diaz’s move to Liverpool will come as a bitter blow to Spurs. After missing out on Adama Traore, Fabio Paratici thought he might have an ace up his sleeve in Diaz. Indeed, up until yesterday, it appeared that Tottenham were indeed going to land the impressive forward on a big-money deal.

However, Liverpool seem to have got wind of the situation and FSG have seemingly authorised a deal. Multiple reports today are suggesting a fee has been agreed and discussions will continue this weekend with Diaz. It is hoped – from an Anfield perspective at least – that Diaz will be in the building before Monday’s deadline.

But what for Spurs now? Well, according to Football.London, it could be back to the drawing board. Their report claims Tottenham insiders are fuming at the way their bid to land Diaz was leaked to Portuguese media. There is a belief that this has alerted Liverpool, who have simply stepped in knowing that Diaz’s agent has been pushing for a move for a while.

Tottenham, it seems, now have a busy few days ahead to rescue what is looking like an abysmal January window.

TBR’s View: Liverpool Playing The Game, Tottenham Can’t Complain

This is simply how the market works. If Paratici really expected nobody to get wind of a big-money move from Spurs for Diaz, then he is mistaken. Liverpool have tracked the Colombian for some time, so they were always going to be sighted.

For Tottenham, it’s just another mess in what has been a bad window. They’ve missed out on countless players – per reports anyway – and now look like they’re going to have to settle for third and fourth choices.

Certainly, they’ve not done anything as yet to suggest Antonio Conte will be a happy man. In a nutshell, they’ve missed out on a fine player here. Dubbed ‘sensational’ by reporters, Spurs fans will looking on at Liverpool with envy.
