‘Too high’… Tottenham just can’t afford to sign £70m player in January

Tottenham have work to do in the January transfer window.

The north London club’s lack of squad depth has been exposed by their recent injury crisis, while they still haven’t properly replaced Harry Kane.

Luckily, we’re just weeks away from the transfer window opening, and Spurs have been linked with a number of potential new additions.

One player who has been strongly linked with a move to Spurs for a long time now is Ivan Toney, but according to The Mail’s Josh Hughes, this deal won’t be easy to do.

Indeed, speaking on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube channel, the journalist has been discussing Tottenham’s interest in Toney, and while he says the striker is someone the club like, the player’s asking price is just too high.

Toney too expensive

Hughes shared what he knows about the £70m man.

“Spurs do like Ivan Toney, I don’t think that’s a secret, a lot of clubs like Ivan Toney. Again though, I can’t see Ivan Toney moving to Spurs this window. The asking price is just too high, Brentford are going to ask for as much money as they want because they know how valuable he is,” Hughes said.

A lot for Ivan Toney

We can understand why Spurs would be hesitant to spend big money on Toney at this point.

The reported £70m pricetag is a huge amount of money for a player who, with all due respect, has only had one top-class Premier League season, and, in the same breath, Spurs do have other work to do in January.

A new centre-back has to be the priority in the winter window, and while a new striker would be nice, it’s not as though Spurs are struggling to put the ball into the back of the net at the moment.

Toney would be a good signing, but if he’s going to cost huge money, Spurs may be best off looking elsewhere.
