Toni Kroos has now changed his mind after what he previously said about Liverpool this season

Liverpool have hit a slight bump in the road throughout the past week, and this has led to Toni Kroos retracting something he said about the club earlier in the year.

The Reds have lost consecutive games against Brighton and Galatasaray, putting them under some scrutiny for the first time this season.

Arne Slot’s men have yet to look truly convincing in this campaign, with many of their victories coming courtesy of dramatic last-minute goals.

Florian Wirtz has struggled to impress, while Alexander Isak has also yet to perform at the highest level, which is raising questions about how far the team can actually go.

Toni Kroos no longer backs Liverpool as a Champions League contender

The iconic German footballer predicted that Liverpool was one of the four favourites to win the Champions League this season.

However, after watching the first two games in the competition, Kroos has now reversed that statement during the latest Einfach mal Luppen podcast.

“We had touched on it briefly once. I had listed four: Real, Barca, Paris, and Liverpool. Those were the four teams I mentioned that I see as contenders to win the Champions League.

“I think you had left Paris out, right? Honestly, I can’t really imagine that. If so, then I’ll bring them back in now. I’ll bring them back in now, and I’d leave Liverpool out.”

Liverpool currently sit 17th in the Champions League table, with three points after the opening two fixtures.

The Reds won their opening game against Atletico Madrid 3-2, but a last-minute goal from Virgil Van Dijk secured that win in dramatic fashion.

However, they weren’t as lucky against Galatasaray. There was no late goal to save them, and Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat, with these two performances clearly not winning Kroos over.

Arne Slot wants to win the Champions League this season

Slot wasted no time making an impact at Anfield during his first season in charge of the club, guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title.

While Slot hopes to achieve just as much success in England this time around, he has admitted to TNT Sports that the Champions League is his priority this time.

“If I can only win one, it’s almost impossible, but I would go for the Champions League this time.”
