Tom Huddlestone says 27-year-old Tottenham man is one of the quickest players in Europe

Tom Huddlestone believes that Timo Werner has the attributes to be a brilliant signing for Tottenham Hotspur, insisting that he has the pace to be perfect for Ange Postecoglou’s system.

Timo Werner would have been a player few Spurs fans would have expected to see linked with a move to the club in the January transfer window.

But Tottenham acted quickly to bring the Germany international in on loan. Of course, he has something of a point to prove after an underwhelming time at Chelsea. He also struggled to rediscover his previous form for RB Leipzig.

Ange Postecoglou was impressed as Werner made his Tottenham debut away at Manchester United at the weekend.

And speaking on talkSPORT, Tom Huddlestone insisted that while he is never likely to be prolific for Tottenham, Werner has the ability to prove to be an inspired signing for the club.

“It’s strange saying it, as a striker, that doesn’t seem to be his strongest point [scoring goals]. Out of possession, he’s energetic and fit, which is the way Ange wants to play. In possession, they’ve always got constant runners in behind. And I think he’s probably one of the best and quickest in Europe at doing that,” he said.

What Postecoglou has done with a number of players should leave most feeling quietly confident that Werner could be a really smart signing.

Guglielmo Vicario has arguably been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, there is a similar argument to be made for Destiny Udogie at left-back.

The likes of Pedro Porro, Yves Bissouma, Heung-min Son and Richarlison have found form again. And Werner have shown in the past that he is someone who does possess a lot of quality when he is playing well.

It was such a surprise move that Postecoglou must surely have a plan in mind for the 27-year-old. And that should be a frightening thought for those battling Tottenham this season.

He clearly has a huge amount of potential if the Spurs boss is able to get the best out of him.
