Liverpool finished last season by claiming their sixth Champions League trophy, beating Tottenham in a tense finale.
It capped an impressive season for the Reds who were denied the Premier League title by a single point.
The challenge for Jurgen Klopp during 2019/20 will undoubtedly be to topple Manchester City and claim their maiden title in the modern era.
In order to do that, the German boss will hope to keep his squad together, whilst potentially adding one or two players.
One man who definitely shouldn’t be on Klopp’s list of target, however, is Barcelona misfit Philippe Coutinho.
Departure could happen
The ex-Liverpool man could be on the move this summer if the right offer is forthcoming.
Those might be wide of the mark, but it’s time for Liverpool to put the past to bed as far as Coutinho is concerned.
Make no bones about it, the £200k-a-week (Total Sportek) player was decent during his five years at Anfield. He netted 54 goals and registered 45 assists in 201 appearances for the club.
Liverpool have moved on though and the last thing Klopp needs is someone upsetting the applecart.
Team spirit seems sky high in the Liverpool dressing room right now and Coutinho’s attitude in forcing through a move to Barcelona won’t be forgotten easily.
The 27-year-old hasn’t held down a regular place at the Spanish champions for some time and his confidence could well be shot.
Liverpool Football Club isn’t in a position where they desperately need players to come in.
If it wasn’t Coutinho and Liverpool were apparently chasing another player with 21 goals in 76 appearances, it’s fair to say supporters would see it as underwhelming.
Because it is Coutinho some people will keep the rose-tinted glasses on and that shouldn’t be the case.
The Reds would be wise to steer clear of Coutinho this summer and finally put an end to the constant speculation surrounding a return to Merseyside.
