Thomas Tuchel has already explained Harry Maguire England snub

Thomas Tuchel has caused a stir after choosing to leave Harry Maguire out of England’s World Cup squad.

The Manchester United No.5 was part of the squad during the last international break – as the Three Lions played Uruguay and Japan in friendlies at Wembley – but learned on Thursday ahead of the official announcement on Friday that he will not be travelling with England to the United States this summer.

It is a decision that has baffled many, considering Maguire played a key role at the 2018 World Cup as England finished fourth, and the 2020 European Championship as the Three Lions lost to Italy in the final.

Tuchel is yet to explain his decision, but comments made by the German in March after the 1-1 draw against Uruguay offer a strong hint towards the reason.

Lack of “mobility” might be the reason for Thomas Tuchel snubbing Harry Maguire

The 52-year-old admitted in March that Maguire was behind Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Trevoh Chalobah and John Stones in the pecking order, suggesting “mobility” is what he wants from his central defenders.

Tuchel – who is seriously considering Danny Welbeck – said: “I haven’t changed my mind (on Maguire) but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile. I see Ezri Konsa ahead, I see Marc Guehi ahead. It’s no secret. I see Trevoh Chalobah on the level of mobility was slightly ahead of him.

“Also John Stones, but he had injuries so he needed to come in camp. I needed to meet him (Maguire) in person to see how he acts within the group. It will be interesting now to see how he acts within the group.”

Maguire – who Wayne Rooney defended – did well for Manchester United after returning from this international break, helping the Red Devils to three wins and a draw from four Premier League games, playing 90 minutes in each and also grabbing an assist in the victory over Brentford.

The 33-year-old has made no secret of his disappointment at the news.

Maguire took to X (previously known as Twitter) to write: “I was confident I could of played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision.

“I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer.”

Tuchel will officially name his full 26-man squad on Friday from 9.45am.
