What England and Thomas Tuchel think about Danny Welbeck call-up amid strong Premier League form

TBR Football understands that Danny Welbeck is under consideration for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s next England squad.

Danny Welbeck has been in incredible form for Brighton and Hove Albion since the start of last season, scoring 10 goals and registering four assists last time out in the Premier League, and he’s already got five goals in nine games so far this season.

With Harry Kane set to be a certain starter amid his outstanding form for Bayern Munich, it all comes down to who his backup stars will be for England.

And with no out-and-out strikers in the mix in the current squad given the injury to Ollie Watkins, Welbeck could make the cut after impressing Thomas Tuchel.

Sources: Thomas Tuchel has been watching Danny Welbeck with a view to his next England squad

TBR Football understands that despite turning 35 next month and being without a cap for over seven years, Danny Welbeck could be set for a remarkable recall to the England squad.

The striker has been in good form, and is the Premier League’s highest-scoring Englishman.

We understand that Tuchel and his coaching staff have been watching the former Manchester United man in recent weeks, with World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania on the horizon.

Although England have already topped their group with six wins from six and no goals conceded, Tuchel would undoubtedly want the perfect record.

And Welbeck could be brought in to see that over the line as he continues to age like a fine wine.

TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey confirmed: “I am told that Thomas Tuchel has been hugely impressed with what he has seen from Danny Welbeck so far this season.

“And why shouldn’t he be – Welbeck is the top scoring Englishman in the Premier League, and his goals are coming against good teams too – Chelsea, Newcastle and Manchester United.

“I understand Welbeck would be open to it, he has seen Jordan Henderson recalled…so why not him? is the attitude.”

Only Antoine Semenyo, Igor Thiago and Erling Haaland have outscored Welbeck in the Premier League this season and if he can keep up that run of form, Tuchel may well select him.

Danny Welbeck has an incredibly underrated goalscoring record for England

Welbeck first burst onto the England national team scene in 2011 after somewhat of a breakthrough season on loan at Sunderland.

Heading to Euro 2012, Welbeck scored an incredible backheel goal to see England beat Sweden 3-2 and eventually qualify for the knockout stages.

The striker became a regular appearance maker for Manchester United, and then Welbeck was sold to Arsenal in 2014.

His time at the Emirates included a five-goal haul that saw him head to Russia with the World Cup squad in 2018. The Manchester-born star hasn’t played since then, but he does have a record of 16 goals in just 42 games for the Three Lions – an incredible tally.

Welbeck was even wanted for a return to Manchester United under Erik ten Hag but a deal never went through.

It would be the most remarkable of call-ups, but Marcus Rashford was the only other option who could possibly play up front after Ollie Watkins withdrew with injury.

Other options such as Dominic Solanke are unlikely to be in the mix, given he’s yet to score this season, and Ivan Toney moving to the Saudi Pro League means his stock has gone down, despite a strong goalscoring record.
