Nuno Tavares has become a fan favourite at Arsenal ever since he joined the club. The Portuguese defender’s latest comments have made Gunners supporters love him even more.

Mikel Arteta and Edu were desperate to sign a new left-back in the summer. A few accomplished names were linked with a move to the Emirates, but Tavares, an unknown to many, became the chosen one.

The 21-year-old was expected to remain a backup to Kieran Tierney throughout the season. That role hasn’t changed yet, but his recent performances have definitely given Arteta more food for thought.

The Arsenal boss even labelled Tavares as ‘exceptional‘ recently. Tierney will have to be wary about his place in the side now.

In an interview with Sky Sports ahead of the game against Liverpool, Tavares had his say on people who were surprised that Arsenal are now winning games consistently.

He said: “We are confident about going to Anfield and winning the game with a clean sheet or not. We want to win the game, and more importantly than a clean sheet, get the three points.

“Arsenal is a big club with big players. It is normal for us to win games. For us, we want to be in the top one.

“I don’t know why people are so surprised. People need to understand we are Arsenal and we need to win games to reach our objectives.”
