Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has admitted that Bernd Leno is disappointed about the fact that he is no longer the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The German has almost always been the undisputed number one since he joined Arsenal. He’s a very good goalkeeper, but after conceding nine goals in three games, Arteta felt that a change was needed.

Summer signing Aaron Ramsdale was brought into the side in place of Leno and he has been brilliant. The Englishman has helped change Arsenal’s fortunes this season and he is now the club’s number one.

Leno, like every other dropped player, would like his spot back, but it’s unlikely that it’ll happen. Arteta was quizzed about him and the Arsenal boss admitted that the German is disappointed about losing his place.

Arteta: Bernd Leno is disappointed

The Spaniard said, as per Arseblog: “What we have experienced with Bernd over the last three years, first as a person, I didn’t have any doubts[about his attitude].

“Obviously, he’s disappointed and he should be disappointed because he wants to play and he’s used to playing. At the same time, what he needs to do is raise his level and he’s going to raise Aaron’s level [in doing that].

“If Aaron is performing really well, a big part of that is because Bernd is next to him, trying to help him and support him in training and make him a great goalkeeper and this is what we want.”

Leno is 29 already and he is at the stage of his career where he needs to play every week. Labelled as ‘magnificent‘ by Arteta, the German will soon enter the final 18 months of his contract, and he’ll have a decision to make.

Ramsdale is playing out of his skin at the moment and he will not be dropped anytime soon. The fact that he’s 23 means that he’s there for the long run as well, which further complicates things for Leno.

It really does look like the German’s Arsenal career is coming to an end. The January transfer window might open the door for him to move elsewhere, but the problem for Arteta is that he’ll have to dive into the market again to find another goalkeeper.
