There is ‘no chance’ Ange Postecoglou will sell £27m Tottenham player in January

Tottenham Hotspur will not sell Giovani Lo Celso in the January transfer window despite interest from Spanish champions Barcelona.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side finally ended their winless run with a fantastic victory over Newcastle United on Sunday. They look like they are back on track, but business in January will be key. All eyes will be on incomings, but there are a few who could leave as well. Lo Celso, however, will not be one of them, says Dean Jones.

Tottenham will not sell Giovani Lo Celso in January

Tottenham made Giovani Lo Celso‘s initial loan deal permanent for £27.2 million in January 2020 (BBC).

The Argentine showed real promise when he first came to Spurs, but he slowly fell out of favour. Neither Jose Mourinho nor Antonio Conte really fancied him, and everyone expected him to leave last summer.

However, Ange Postecoglou kept hold of Lo Celso, and following James Maddison’s injury, the 27-year-old has been given some good game time.

Despite that, Barcelona are interested in signing him in January. Xavi has reportedly requested his club’s transfer chiefs to sign the Tottenham midfielder next month.

However, journalist Jones has claimed that there’s no chance Postecoglou’s Tottenham will sell Lo Celso in the upcoming January transfer window.

He told GiveMeSport: “[As a squad player], you have to consider what success is. To be part of a team like Tottenham right now, if you’re getting good game time, I think it’s enough.

“Even if you’re coming into a game as a sub, you’re playing as much of the game as the starter has, anyway. Games are extending towards 100 minutes and beyond. So, if you’re coming on at half-time, you’re getting longer than the guy who started the match in the first place. This becomes part of being a squad player, which Lo Celso has been. He’s going to get more opportunities.

“I think he’s going to be an important player, and I think the most telling factor of all here is that Tottenham are going to want to hold on to him for now, and there’s no chance of him leaving.”

Lo Celso could be a key player for Tottenham

Giovani Lo Celso is by no means the first choice at Tottenham, and he probably will never be.

James Maddison will start almost every game once he’s back, while following Dejan Kulusevski‘s performance in midfield against Newcastle, he too might be above Lo Celso in the pecking order for that number 10 role.

However, the Argentine may still have a key role to play off the bench. He has already shown that he fits Postecoglou’s system and he can chip in with goals too – look at his strikes against Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Keeping hold of Lo Celso in January makes the most sense, in our opinion, and that shouldn’t change unless a big offer comes in next month.
