Amid all of the players Tottenham Hotspur lost against Chelsea tonight, Ange Postecoglou has now given an update on James Maddison.

Maddison was substituted late in the first half after taking a hit to his ankle.

And when Micky van de Ven pulled up with a painful hamstring injury, Postecoglou decided to take preventative measures.

Maddison did look slightly surprised to be substituted at the time, but Tottenham clearly weren’t willing to take any further risks.

Speaking to BBC Sport straight after the game, Postecoglou confirmed that Maddison did take a knock to his ankle.

He said: “He got a knock on the ankle, we were down one man already.

“It made sense to make a couple of changes at that point.”

And as the dust settles on a crazy night, the decision will likely prove a sensible one.

Maddison is already so key to this Tottenham project under Posteocoglou, and he is the last player they want to be missing now.

Cristian Romero will now face a ban, and van de Ven looked in a ton of pain as mentioned.

Spurs will now have to muster something of a makeshift back four for their coming fixtures, one that will also miss Destiny Udogie for a game.

Postecoglou confirms that Tottenham also lost Maddison to injury against Chelsea

Whilst a chaotic 90 minutes will have quite dramatic ramifications for Spurs in the coming weeks, they did come out of the game with a lot of credit.

Guglielmo Vicario was outstanding and didn’t deserve to concede four goals in any circumstance.

Son Heung-Min somehow managed to retain a goal threat even with his side down to nine men.

There were still so many positives for Spurs to take.

And both Postecoglou and Tottenham will now be sweating on the fitness of Maddison with some key games to come.

Maddison has been nursing an injury at times this season, and Spurs will have to take this issue seriously.

And as the week unfolds, Postecoglou will likely be able to provide further clarity on the severity of this knock.
