Jermaine Pennant believes Newcastle United have a real chance of signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Arsenal before the end of this month.

The January transfer window is open and it’s now time for Newcastle’s new owners to show what they’ve got. The expectation around the club is massive at the moment, and a player of Aubameyang’s stature would certainly be a statement signing.

The Gabon star has been pushed out of the Arsenal side by Mikel Arteta following a disciplinary breach. It looks like the Gunners boss has had enough, and a move away this month seems a very big possibility.

The Mirror revealed on New Year’s Day that the Magpies have contacted the Gunners about signing Aubameyang on loan with the option of buying him permanently for £20 million in the summer. Pennant believes it could really happen.

Newcastle United's January Transfer Window Dilemma

Jermaine Pennant: Aubameyang to Newcastle could happen

The ex-Arsenal man said on Stadium Astro: “As a professional footballer, it doesn’t matter, you want to play football. And, if it is not happening at Arsenal, he won’t want to sit there on the weekend watching his teammates play while he is sat at home, he will want to play football.

“He’s a great player and he will want to showcase that. It could be a chance to get another big move off the back of that. Getting stripped of a captaincy, there is not really much coming back from that.

“We know he is not going to be a starter, we know he’s not going to get much game time. There is every chance this Newcastle deal could come off, for sure.”

A move away from Arsenal seems like the best thing for Aubameyang at the moment, but whether the Gunners will allow him to join another Premier League club is a different story.

The Gabon star has also been linked with moves to Juventus and Barcelona in recent weeks. With all due respect to Newcastle, the two foreign sides are a lot more attractive than the Magpies, which makes a move there a lot likelier.

Arsenal paid £56 million for the striker in January 2018 (BBC) and despite what has happened over the last 18 months, he has been a terrific player for them. However, if the right offer does land on the table in the coming weeks, it is likely that Arteta and Edu will let him go, even if it’s to Newcastle.

It will be interesting to see if the Toon can convince Auba to switch Arsenal for a relegation battle. If they can, it would be a huge statement by the new owners and their chances of survival will go up considerably.
