Following their mid-week EFL Cup efforts, Newcastle United and Arsenal will meet in a Premier League clash at St James’ Park on Sunday.

After five games played, Newcastle have six points down in 13th, whereas Arsenal are the closest side to Liverpool in second.

2 ArsenalArsenal5 3 1 1 10 2 8 10

In recent years, St James’ Park hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Mikel Arteta and his side – Arsenal haven’t won on Tyneside since 2023.

And Newcastle have actually won four of the last six meetings between the two sides both home and away – Eddie Howe has Arteta’s number to a certain extent.

But without Alexander Isak to scupper their plans, Arsenal may feel slightly more confident heading up north on this occasion, even if Noni Madueke will miss the game through injury.

Theo Walcott backs Gabriel Magalhaes to score in Arsenal’s win over Newcastle

That being said, former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has now predicted the score when the two teams meet on Sunday.

Newcastle play Bradford City and Arsenal will travel to face Port Vale beforehand, but both Premier League giants are expected to navigate those ties with relative ease.

And once league football resumes on the weekend, Walcott is expecting his old side to get the job done at St James’ Park.

Providing his score prediction on the ‘It’s Called Soccer!’ podcast, Walcott simply said: “2-1 Arsenal.”

When pressed for a goalscorer, Walcott predicted Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes to bag a goal away from home, alluding to his old side’s strength from set-pieces.

Gabriel has been surprisingly quiet thus far from set-pieces this campaign, but with Nicolas Jover pulling the strings behind the scenes, the 27-year-old’s scoring will no doubt resume soon enough.

Eddie Howe has an impressive record against Mikel Arteta

As mentioned, Newcastle have enjoyed their fair share of success against Arsenal in recent years.

And when it comes to high-profile managers Howe enjoys facing, the Englishman has a far better record against Arteta in comparison to others.

Howe’s record against Arteta also includes games in charge of Bournemouth, when Arsenal would have gone into those games as firm favourites.

An excellent tactician, Howe seems to have worked out how to play against Arteta’s sides better than some others.

And after Nick Woltemade has impressed in glimpses for Newcastle, Howe might be hoping that his new big-money striker can really kick off his Premier League career against Arsenal.
