Jeff Stelling has labelled Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as the ‘ultimate surprise package’ this season.

Guglielmo Vicario completed a switch to Tottenham from Empoli over the summer in a deal worth around £17 million

It’s fair to say that many Spurs fans were initially underwhelmed by the move, with the club previously linked to David Raya.

But Vicario has been amongst the best goalkeepers in the league this term and has outperformed the now Arsenal goalkeeper Raya.

Indeed, Jamie Carragher named the Italian in his Premier League Team of the Season last night.

And it would appear that Jeff Stelling agrees with Carragher that Vicario has been the best goalkeeper in the league so far this season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Dean Saunders was picking a goalkeeper for his Team of the Season so far.

The pundit opted for Liverpool’s Alisson Becker but Stelling disagreed.

“In goal, I’ve got Alisson,” Saunders said.

“No,” Stelling responded. “I’m going to argue because Vicario has been the standout keeper this season.”

Saunders added: “Where are they in the league? I’m going to say that Liverpool are right up there and he’s playing well.”

Stelling then went on to explain why he thinks Vicario has outperformed Alisson this season.

“Doesn’t matter where they are in the league,” he said. “Alisson is a good goalkeeper we know but Vicario I think is the ultimate surprise package.

“He has been sensational for Spurs.”

The signing of Vicario is proving to be an astute move from Tottenham considering his talents were relatively unknown in England beforehand.

Yet, the 27-year-old deserves to be in with a shout for the best goalkeeper in the league so far this season.

He’s barely put a foot wrong between the sticks for Tottenham and the £17 million they paid to sign him looks better with each passing week.
