‘He’s been brilliant’… Jamie Carragher blown away by £17m Tottenham player this season

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has named Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario in his Premier League Team of the Season so far.

Spurs have had a very good first half of the campaign, haven’t they? They are currently fifth in the table, just six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. Vicario has arguably been their best player.

Tottenham signed Guglielmo Vicario from Serie A side Empoli in the summer for just £17 million (Daily Mail).

Not many people had heard of the Italian back then, but over the last five months, he has made a name for himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Vicario has saved Tottenham on so many occasions already this season. His shot-stopping has been unbelievable, and he has dealt with Spurs’ high line very well too.

Jamie Carragher, who is adamant that Liverpool’s Alisson Becker is the best goalkeeper in the world, still chose Vicario over the Brazilian in his Team of the Season last night.

He said about Vicario on Sky Sports: “I just think because he’s new to the Premier League – I think Alisson is the best goalkeeper in the world – but in terms of being new to the Premier League, his xG prevention is the most in the league as well.

“I think he’s been brilliant with the high line, coming off his line and helping Spurs with that as well. For a new keeper to come into the Premier League and perform as well as he has done, that’s why he is in.”

Vicario has been Tottenham’s best player

James Maddison and Micky van de Ven earned a ton of plaudits for the way they started the season, while Heung-min Son has been sensational as well. However, we think Guglielmo Vicario has been Tottenham’s best player so far this term.

The Italian’s performances have been so good, and Spurs’ expected goals against stats prove it. Tottenham have an xGA of 40.82 this season, but they’ve only conceded 29 goals (Understat).

That means Vicario has managed to save 11 goals already for his side, and that is one of the biggest reasons why Tottenham are so close to the top at the moment.

Spurs would be in real trouble now if Vicario hadn’t done what he has managed to do so far. If he continues this form, he will likely lead Tottenham back into the Champions League.
