Arsenal have won many trophies since they were founded back in 1886.

The Gunners boast a record 14 FA Cup victories, 13 league titles, 17 FA Community Shield successes and two League Cups in terms of domestic competitions.

On the European scene, Arsenal have won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and also the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

However, there is actually another domestic competition Arsenal have won which no other English side has – and will never get the chance to – in the form of the Football League Centenary Trophy.

When Arsenal won the Football League Centenary Trophy

The Football League Centenary Trophy was a competition held in 1988 – designed to celebrate the 100th birthday of The Football League.

It involved the sides who made up the top eight of the Football League First Division the season before, with the final taking place at Villa Park in October 1988 – the birthplace of league football in England.

As you can see, Arsenal actually finished sixth that term, but still managed to emerge victorious and win the Football League Centenary Trophy with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United.

Paul Davis and Michael Thomas scored the goals for the Gunners, with Clayton Blackmore getting on the scoresheet for the Red Devils.

Arsenal, who want Joan Garcia, beat QPR by two goals to nil in the quarter-final stage, before a stunning 2-1 victory over champions Liverpool in the semi-final.

It remains to be seen if the Football League decide to host a second edition of this competition in 2088.

What Arsenal won after lifting the Football League Centenary Trophy in 1988

Not only did Arsenal – who could lose William Saliba to Real Madrid – receive a trophy for winning the Football League Centenary Trophy, but there was also a cash prize.

The Gunners were handed £50,000 in prize money, which equates to £136,596 in today’s money.

It may not carry the gloss of a UEFA Champions League or Premier League title, although the Football League Centenary Trophy is a truly rare competition Arsenal can lay claim to as the only winners.
