‘The hero’…Martin Keown seriously impressed by £30m Arsenal player v Brentford today

Aaron Ramsdale might have had a stinker in the opening 45 minutes for Arsenal v Brentford today but he redeemed himself in the end.

Ramsdale had a nightmare as Yoann Wissa managed to sneak an equaliser for the Bees just before half-time and it looked like being a costly error as Brentford dug deep.

However, a few crucial saves from Ramsdale – notably from Ivan Toney’s long-range effort – and then a late Kai Havertz goal ensured a huge three points for the Gunners.

And speaking about Ramsdale’s contribution to the game, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown felt that the stopper could now be considered the hero, rather than the villain he was on course to be.

“Thankfully we’re now talking about Ramsdale maybe being the hero with the two great saves he made. Havertz, really important goal. You can see the relief from Ramsdale and you feel it within the stadium. That’s a significant win for Arsenal,” Keown said.

Ramsdale was embraced by his teammates at the end in a clear moment of getting behind the £30m goalkeeper.

Aaron Ramsdale can hold his head high in the end

Ramsdale will definitely be getting Kai Havertz a pint tonight. Or whatever he chooses to drink.

If Arsenal had drawn this game the narrative and pressure around the former Sheffield United man would have been enormous.

Ramsdale, to his credit, and as Keown says, made some big saves in the end that helped Arsenal over the line.

But he does have Ben White and others to thank for the game being 2-1 and taking that pressure off him.

In the end, if it is Ramsdale’s last game at The Emirates, then it’s one for him to remember and tell the kids about at least.

For Arsenal in general, this felt like a massive night and a huge moment in the title race.
