'That's true': Klopp says 'outstanding' 24-year-old Liverpool player will play against Forest tomorrow
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on Joe Gomez before confirming that he will get an opportunity to play against Nottingham Forest tomorrow.
The 24-year-old Englishman was once a mainstay in Liverpool’s defence alongside Virgil van Dijk. He was absolutely brilliant for the Reds as well, but a terrible injury last season pushed him down the pecking order.
Gomez now has van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate all ahead of him and that really is a shame as he’s a quality defender who is more than good enough to play regularly in the Premier League.
Klopp has sympathised with Gomez and has branded him as an outstanding player. He even claimed that the Englishman will get an opportunity in Liverpool’s next game, which is against Forest in the cup tomorrow.
Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool star Joe Gomez is a top-class player
The German said about Gomez, as per Liverpool’s official website: “Joe is outstanding – an outstanding centre-half and an even better boy. He is good, but of course, it is not the situation he would have wished for [this season so far].
“He was injured for a really long time and then he comes back and thinks, ‘OK, I’m ready, let’s go’ and then we have the situation where the three others could start earlier, could gain rhythm and stuff like this, game after game.
“He is a top-class player, he is not an inch worse than all the other three who are playing, but the other three have rhythm, that’s why they play more often. That’s a little bit the problem we have, but at a club with our aims and ambitions, it can happen. It will not last forever, but so far it happened like this.
“The next game (against Nottingham Forest on Sunday) would be a good opportunity, that’s true.”
TBR View:
Gomez really is a quality centre-half but he might have to fill in at right-back again tomorrow.
Klopp confirmed yesterday that Trent Alexander-Arnold has suffered a hamstring injury and he will be unavailable for a few weeks.
James Milner is a player who can fill in there, but Gomez has played at right-back on multiple occasions this season and it is likely he will start there at the City Ground tomorrow.
It will be interesting to see what will happen to Gomez in the summer. With the World Cup coming up at the end of this year, he can’t just sit on the bench as he has done more often than not this season. He needs to play and a move away might be the best option for him before the start of next season.
