'That's special': Roberto Martinez says he's been seriously impressed by one Everton player this season

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has been seriously impressed with Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

In an interview with HLN, Martinez was talking about how the 21-year-old Onana has impressed him since arriving in the Premier League.

Onana arrived at Goodison Park from Lille in the summer in a deal worth £33.5m.

The defensive midfielder, who can also play in a box-to-box role, has started Everton’s last five games.

He already looks like an important piece of Frank Lampard’s midfield, combining well with Idrissa Gueye and Alex Iwobi.

Onana recorded his first assist for his new club at the weekend, heading Demarai Gray’s free kick back across goal for Conor Coady to volley in.

He’s yet to score his first Everton goal, and Lampard has already told the youngster he needs to be scoring more.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Onana is a ‘special talent’, and the start he’s made at Goodison Park suggests that’s certainly the case.

As well as earning a move to the Premier League this summer, Onana also made his international debut.

Martinez brought Onana on at half-time during Belgium’s National League defeat to the Netherlands in June.

He went on to win his second cap last month against the same opposition, this time earning his first start.

Martinez admitted that he had tried Arsenal’s Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nottingham Forest’s Orel Mangala in the same role.

However, it looks like Martinez has been most impressed with Onana, which could earn him a spot in his squad going to Qatar.

“We’ve tried with Orel Mangala and (Albert) Sambi Lokonga before.” Martinez said.

“Now (Amadou) Onana got his chance. He has adapted very well.

“Amadou now plays in the Premier League, which will only make him stronger. He has physical qualities that we haven’t seen since Fellaini.

“He is also a leader. Despite his age – he is only 20 (21) – he already has a lot of experience.

“Amadou has already played in three top European competitions: the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and now the Premier League.

“That’s ‘special’. He is a very useful player.”
