‘That is quite a statement’… Gary Lineker reacts after what Alan Shearer has just said about Declan Rice

Following another impressive Arsenal performance this weekend, both Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have been continually amazed by one player.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal won 2-0 against Brighton Hove Albion at the Emirates, an opposition often now considered the side’s ‘bogey team’.

And with that stellar result and performance, Arsenal are now heading to Anfield this weekend top of the Premier League.

Moreover, when discussing the game on ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast following the weekend, both Lineker and Shearer were amazed by Arsenal’s new midfield general.

Alan Shearer showered Declan Rice in praise, and although probably in agreement, Gary Lineker almost couldn’t believe what he was saying.

Shearer said: “I know we keep mentioning him but Declan Rice.

“Honestly, he was just in everything he did, whether he was protecting the back four, whether he was bursting forward with the ball, having efforts at goal. He was fantastic.

“And Wrighty said it last night, he is making £100 million look like a bargain.”

Lineker replied: “That is quite a statement!”

Of course, very few pundits or fans would disagree with that statement right now.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Arsenal look to have signed a generational talent this summer.

That statement is often thrown around, attributed to the wrong players, but Rice does deserve the title.

It would be a huge shame if Mikel Arteta didn’t win serious silverware with this squad he’s building, and particularly with Rice at the pivot.

Arsenal’s recruitment has been fairly immaculate in the last few windows, with perhaps only David Raya now needing to justify his eventual price tag.

However, if you look at the success Arsenal have had elsewhere with their talent identification, the future still bodes well for Raya.

Getting this level of praise from a pundit like Shearer or Lineker is rare, it’s not often any player, Arsenal or not, can justify a £105m price tag.

But Declan Rice is even now being labelled a bargain at that fee.

And with that said, one pundit now believes Arsenal have a serious chance of making history this season.
