TBR view: Newcastle should consider making a move for potential Everton outcast

Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has been the victim of some serious criticism this season. The Icelandic international has struggled to produce the performances he has done in the past and fans want him out. Should Newcastle take a gamble on him and make a move?

The 30-year-old has scored just one league goal this season and is not enjoying life at Goodison Park. He has played in 18 of the clubs 21 Premier League games, but not to fans satisfaction. He has been accused of going missing, with some fans hoping they do not see him in an Everton shirt again.

It seems unlikely that the Toffees will seek to get anything near the £45 million they paid for his services in 2017. He is a player who can change games in an instant when on form, and could just be unhappy at Goodison.

Newcastle could offer him an escape route and in the right position, he could certainly still be effective. Last season, Sigurdsson scored 13 Premier League goals and provided six assists in the league and was a hugely important player for the club. He helped the Toffees to an impressive eighth-place finish.

He could operate as part of a midfield three for Newcastle alongside the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden. He would pose more of a goal threat than Miguel Almiron and could provide the key in unlocking the potential of record signing Joelinton upfront.
