Everton fans criticise Gylfi Sigurdsson’s performance in 1-0 defeat at Anfield

Everton will never get a better chance to break their awful run against Liverpool, especially at Anfield, than the one they got in the FA Cup third round yesterday.

Curtis Jones sealed a 1-0 victory with a stunning goal in the second half as a rotated Reds side saw off an experienced Toffees team.

A decent first half performance should have seen Everton go in ahead at half time but it was a pathetic second half display as Liverpool took control.

Much of that was to do with a flimsy midfield performance and Gylfi Sigurdsson was particularly guilty before being replaced by Fabian Delph.

Sigurdsson was not in his natural role as a deeper midfielder but he has the experience to cope against youngsters such as Jones – he was utterly overrun and there’s no excuse.

Many Everton fans on Twitter were keen to lay into Sigurdsson after the match, which must be a now low in terms of failures at Anfield, of which there have been many down the years.

The result lays bare the scale of the job Carlo Ancelotti has on his hands and there are plenty of online fans who don’t want Sigurdsson to form part of it.
