Dean Saunders has said Newcastle United fans now love Anthony Gordon after the attacker’s superb performance this weekend against Chelsea.

The 22-year-old forward has been sensational for the Magpies this season, with Alan Shearer lauding Gordon yesterday after his impressive display in Newcastle’s 4-1 win against the Blues.

And speaking on TalkSPORT (26/11 6:43am), Saunders has joined in on praising the England youth international as Gordon scored and assisted on the day.

With five goals and three assists in the league already this season, Gordon is well on his way to becoming a talismanic figure for the Magpies, and praise for the winger has been more than warranted.

Indeed, at 22, Gordon is still yet to hit his true potential, and Saunders now thinks that the former Everton man is now a crowd favourite after a rough start to life at Newcastle earlier this year.

Saunders said: “Anthony Gordon’s playing well, he’s got the bit between his teeth, he’s working harder, he’s running around slide tackling and the crowd love him.”

When Gordon initially joined Newcastle at the start of the year, few would have expected the attacker to become as influential as he is now for Eddie Howe’s side.

Yet if the English coach is anything to go by, is that no player is fully written off on his watch, and this season Gordon has been spectacular under Howe for Newcastle.

The winger has been dynamic, creative and dangerous for the Magpies in both the Premier League and in Europe, and Gordon’s potential is now starting to be realised.

In a few more years, it won’t be crazy to see Gordon being Newcastle’s star player, as well as a full England international having starred for the U-21s in recent fixtures.
