TalkSPORT pundit amazed by Tottenham target James Ward-Prowse

Darren Ambrose has told talkSPORT that James Ward-Prowse would get into almost any midfield in world football, in comments that may certainly catch the attention of some connected with Tottenham Hotspur.

Ward-Prowse has enjoyed another outstanding season with Southampton. His tally of nine goals is his best in a single Premier League campaign. And he is into double figures in all competitions.

His form is not going unnoticed it seems. Recent reports noted that Tottenham are monitoring Ward-Prowse and have been long-time admirers of the England international.

Some may unfairly feel that the 27-year-old offers little more than amazing set-piece deliveries. But Ambrose has insisted that there are not many sides around who would not find a place for Ward-Prowse in their plans. He even backed the Saints captain for a key role with England.

He told talkSPORT: “I think he’s fantastic and I said yesterday I think he would get in any midfield apart from Manchester City and Liverpool.

“I think the argument of ‘what has he got other than set plays’ is irrelevant because set plays are a huge part of football.

“I would have him starting for England alongside Declan Rice, I think that bite in midfield, he has massively improved and I think a lot of games are won of set plays. There is no better deliverer of the ball than Ward-Prowse.”

Onus on Southampton this summer to show why James Ward-Prowse should not be tempted by likes of Tottenham

It remains to be seen if Southampton face a fight to keep Ward-Prowse this summer. Certainly, it would not be a surprise if some clubs came calling with bids. And Tottenham may be one.

Spurs could arguably do with greater depth and quality in the middle of the park. The likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg can certainly be outstanding performers. But they do not tend to offer a lot around the final third.

Ward-Prowse would definitely ticks those boxes.

With that in mind, Southampton may be under a little pressure to show Ward-Prowse that staying put is a good option for him. He is at a crucial stage in his career, and he will want the club to show some kind of ambition under their new owners.
