Journalist suggests Tottenham are still monitoring James Ward-Prowse

Alasdair Gold has suggested in a Q&A with Football London that Tottenham Hotspur have been monitoring James Ward-Prowse for some time when asked if there is any interest in the Southampton talisman.

Ward-Prowse has been outstanding once again this season. In fact, he has already achieved his best return in front of goal in a single Premier League campaign. He is on to nine for the season.

Of course, he is generally considered the best set-piece taker in the division. And Saints fans must wonder where they would be had he left the club last summer.

He was linked with a move away from St Mary’s. Reports claimed that Aston Villa made a £25 million bid for the 27-year-old. However, the Saints managed to dig their heels in. And ultimately, he signed a new contract with the club.

His form this season will do their chances of keeping the England international no favours, however. And according to Gold, Spurs are one of the teams who have the midfielder on their radar.

“Spurs have long been keeping an eye on James Ward-Prowse but I wonder just how expensive he’ll be this summer with four years left on his contract and plenty of interested parties. He’d be an excellent addition though for Tottenham with his leadership abilities, dynamic play and of course those set pieces,” Gold told Football London.

James Ward-Prowse would undoubtedly take Tottenham midfield to the next level

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham would want to make a bid for Ward-Prowse. Obviously, he would not come cheap with so long left on his contract.

They could surely expect to pay significantly more than the £25 million Villa offered. But there will be plenty of fans who would feel that he would be worth it.

With Ward-Prowse in the side, there is always a possibility that something big could happen. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are the only Tottenham players to have scored more often than him in the Premier League this season.

Pep Guardiola described him as the best free-kick taker in the world.

Oriol Romeu previously lauded him as an ‘unbelievable‘ player. So if Tottenham get wind that a deal may be at all possible, surely, they must do all they can.
