'Taking the mick': £40m Newcastle United target says Jack Grealish has been roasting him after what he did in training
Maddison has been linked with a move to St James’ Park over the past few months, with Leicester City even knocking back two bids from Newcastle.
The Magpies look set to return for the 26-year-old and the Northern Echo have suggested they could make another bid in January.
Eddie Howe has been on the lookout for attacking reinforcements and Maddison would certainly be a statement signing for the club.
The Leicester man is currently in Qatar with the England side after his dazzling form earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad. And the £40 million-rated Maddison has revealed that Grealish has been ribbing him about what he did in England training.
Maddison on Grealish
Maddison appeared on The Lions Den yesterday and they showed a clip of him getting back on the training pitches in Qatar.
The England midfielder picked up an injury in his last appearance for Leicester before the World Cup and is yet to feature under Southgate.
And on his return to training, he can be seen taking in the moment and interacting with England coach Chris Powell. But Grealish and Jordan Henderson have apparently been bantering him for acting up in-front of the cameras.
“Jack [Grealish] and Hendo [Jordan Henderson] were taking the mick out of this because they said I knew the cameras were there and it was like I was going out at Wembley and stuff,” Maddison said.
“But I was just getting out there, having a little test. Obviously when you go into full training with England it’s sharp, it’s a quality standard and relentless.
“Just making sure everything was ok after my warm-up inside. But it’s such a good feeling to be back out there.”
Of course, Grealish is no stranger to ‘taking the mick’ out of Newcastle players, given his past comments on Miguel Almiron. And while Maddison isn’t a Magpie just yet, St James’ Park looks like a possible destination for him.
Maddison will be hoping to get his chance to impress Southgate during the World Cup, with Mason Mount ahead of him in the pecking order at this moment in time.
The Foxes midfielder will undoubtedly have many keeping an eye on his situation, with his contract set to to run until 2024. But Howe will be hoping that his side can fight off competition for Maddison and secure his signature over the next two transfer windows.
